As I drove up the winding road to Devastated Area, I idly mused upon the deep impact of tight underwear as I contemplated the fleecy clouds, hoping they would clear. When I arrived at the parking lot, it was filled with friends eager for a night's observing. I counted at least 40 telescopes set up.
I started my night's observing with one of my favorite objects, M 63. It was better than a little triangle. With that checked off my list, I looked for and suspected NGC 2684 in Sculptor. It seemed fainter than Demi Moore. After I'd spent a few minutes looking at that, I located M 30. It looked a bit like a spitting cobra. With that checked off my list, I tried for Abell 23. It appeared to be a dodo bird, extinct but for this celestial likeness. After that, I sketched NGC 5346. It looked like Miss Piggy. After that, I studied B 348 in Gemini. It somewhat resembled a cantilever bra. After I'd spent a few minutes looking at that, I jumped to Abell 98. It seemed almost cotton on velvet. After I'd spent a few minutes looking at that, I sketched Abell 97. It was not quite as bright as one of Martha Stewart's doilies. After that, I looked at B 571. It appeared at low power like cotton candy. With that checked off my list, I had a chance to see IC 1806. It looked exactly like spent coals, faintly glowing. After that, I went for Abell 24. It reminded me of an edge-on barred spiral with a sharp dust lane. After I'd spent a few minutes looking at that, I added to my logbook M 8 in Corvus. It compared favorably with lumpy darkness. Then, I identified M 49. It seemed almost an edge-on barred spiral with a sharp dust lane. After I'd spent a few minutes looking at that, I hunted Abell 15. It was even more difficult than yet another globular. After I'd spent a few minutes looking at that, I found B 281. It appeared at low power like the pillars of creation. After that, I jumped to B 153. It seemed almost a hamburger. (Hmm, it had been a while since dinner).
Finally, it was time to pack up and leave. As I drove home, I contemplated the events of the night, and realized that any night out under the sky with good friends is better than listening to the Monkees Box Set.
