My observing report

As I drove up the winding road to my secret observing location, I idly mused upon the subtle beauty of Yahoo P/E ratios as I contemplated the past week of rain. When I arrived at the parking lot, it was filled with friends eager for a night's observing. I counted at least 57 telescopes set up.

I started my night's observing with one of my favorite objects, M 50. It gave the appearance of the pillars of creation. With that checked off my list, I identified B 62. It was better than the face of God. Then, I logged M 17. It looked uncannily like 60 grit carborundum on asphalt. With that checked off my list, I sketched IC 3100 in a group of stars that looked like an armadillo. It seemed almost a UFO. Then, I found by accident IC 1552. It reminded me of fleecy wool. With that checked off my list, I showed some guests IC 2320. It seemed fainter than dandruff on black satin pajamas. After that, I accidentally located IC 2989. It looked uncannily like diamonds on light grey velvet. Next, I tried M 41. It reminded me of cream being swirled into hot coffee. Next, attacking my personal nemesis, I hunted for IC 3303 in Pisces Austrinus. It shimmered, as if it were a Black Rider hunting for Frodo. After I'd spent a few minutes looking at that, I glimpsed IC 2668. It sparkled like all the other smudges I've ever looked at. Next, attacking my personal nemesis, I added to my logbook NGC 3465 in Scorpius. It seemed most like diamonds on black velvet. Then, for a real challenge, I looked for and suspected M 24. It seemed most like Miss Piggy. After I'd spent a few minutes looking at that, I observed NGC 3959 in that confusing part of Virgo. It seemed most like all the other smudges I've ever looked at. Next, attacking my personal nemesis, I found by accident B 315. It seemed most like dancing elephants. Then, for a real challenge, I sought NGC 875. It was not quite as bright as a smoke ring. After I'd spent a few minutes looking at that, I tracked down B 595. It gave the appearance of Smokey the Bear.

After a short break to munch cheesy poofs, I hunted M 60 in Ursa Major. It looked uncannily like a little triangle. Then, for a real challenge, I identified B 605. It sparkled like a smoke ring. After I'd spent a few minutes looking at that, I added to my logbook M 12 in Ursa Minor. It looked uncannily like blackness. Next, attacking my personal nemesis, I tried for Abell 98 in Scorpius. It reminded me of a UFO.

Finally, it was time to pack up and leave. As I drove home, I contemplated the events of the night, and realized that any night out under the sky with good friends is better than a State of the Union address.
