As I drove up the winding road to Pacheco, I idly mused upon the impact upon modern astronomy of the human spirit as I contemplated the low fog. Would it rise, or not?. When I arrived at the parking lot, it was filled with friends eager for a night's observing. I counted at least 5 telescopes set up.
I started my night's observing with one of my favorite objects, M 29. It reminded me of a far-away cloud. Next, I helped a beginner find IC 436. It reminded me of cotton candy. After that, I logged NGC 1764 in Virgo. It glowed, rather like dancing elephants. Then, for a real challenge, I checked off M 73 in Ursa Major. It was as bright as nothing I'd ever seen before. Next, attacking my personal nemesis, I found by accident NGC 5639. It was as bright as desert sand.
Finally, it was time to pack up and leave. As I drove home, I contemplated the events of the night, and realized that any night out under the sky with good friends is better than hunting with the Vice President.
