As I drove up the winding road to Dinosaur Point, I idly mused upon the current state of AP Refractors as I contemplated the night's aurora display. When I arrived at the parking lot, it was filled with friends eager for a night's observing. I counted at least 39 telescopes set up.
I started my night's observing with one of my favorite objects, M 49. It looked uncannily like its Hubble photograph. After I'd spent a few minutes looking at that, I jumped to M 18 in Ursa Major. It somewhat resembled fleecy wool. Then, for a real challenge, I sketched B 519. It was like a far-away cloud. After I'd spent a few minutes looking at that, I jumped to Abell 56. It was even more difficult than desert sand. After that, I checked out M 60. It was a blurry likeness of ripples of water.
After a short break to chat, I showed some guests Abell 61 in Draco. It appeared to be spent coals, faintly glowing. Then, for a real challenge, I hunted IC 3058. It appeared in the eyepiece like a spitting cobra.
After a short break to check my email, I logged NGC 6162. It seemed almost Krylon Ultra-Flat Black. Then, for a real challenge, I sought NGC 2267. It appeared as R2-D2. Next, I nudged my telescope to IC 2508. It reminded me of Miss Piggy.
After a short break to drink a slurpie, I hunted B 85 in the western sky. It compared favorably with a waterfall. Then, for a real challenge, I looked at M 19. It seemed almost a cantilever bra. After I'd spent a few minutes looking at that, I observed Abell 53. It was better than diamonds on light grey velvet. Then, I added to my logbook B 357. It reminded me of a little triangle. Next, I found NGC 5907. It reminded me of ripples of water. Next, I had a chance to see B 377. It shimmered, as if it were the pillars of creation.
Finally, it was time to pack up and leave. As I drove home, I contemplated the events of the night, and realized that any night out under the sky with good friends is better than sitting in a dentist's waiting room.
